چكيده
This study examined the effect of teaching metacognitive strategies on intermediate EFL students' autonomous learning in virtual classes. To achieve this goal, eighteen intermediate EFL learners studying at the Iran Mehr Institute of English Language Teaching participated in the study. After their language level was homogenized by the Oxford Placement Test (OPT), they were semi-randomly divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group received treatment on metacognitive strategies in nine sessions held two days per week. The control group received a placebo in the form of traditional instruction with no focus on teaching metacognitive strategies. The results of the Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon test showed that the teaching of metacognitive strategies had a statistically significant effect on Iranian English learners' autonomous learning in web-based instruction. The findings provide some pedagogical and theoretical implications for teachers, college instructors, professors, and EFL /ESL learners.
