چكيده
This study aimed to identify four major identity aspects including race, gender, social class, and speaker status in the second book of Kish True Beginners II, as these components can essentially construct learners’ identities. To this end, the selected textbook was evaluated based on an evaluation checklist for identity in ESOL textbooks developed by Almatard (2019). Each unit was studied separately, and all of the photos, drawings, and dialogues were analyzed. The genders of the characters were identified by focusing on their body and hair shapes in both photos and drawings. Additionally, their roles were identified by observing the characters’ uniforms and dressings and the tools that they were using. The findings revealed that most of the characters were white, and only white characters had high-ranking roles. In fact, there was a minor group of black with low social status. Additionally, gender inclusion was fairly balanced, with equal roles between genders. Regarding social class, less attention was given to lower-class people in the light of the fact that the majority of people in Iran fit in low social class in comparison to other social classes. Further, in connection with speaker status, none of the audio narrators were native speakers of English. At the end of the study, the theoretical and pedagogical implications of the study are presented.
