The popularity of multimedia is increasing among the younger generation. Therefore, the effect of multimedia technology on language learning is undeniable. Multimedia technology has notably great impact on EFL learners’ vocabulary. Since learning vocabulary is essential for learning a language, it is important for teachers and learners to be familiar with efficient methods that improve vocabulary learning and remembering. This study explores the efficiency of Visual-based Graphical User and Visuospatial- based Zoomable User Interfaces on Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary retrieval and retention. As the first step, Nelson proficiency test was given to 130 intermediate EFL learners who were selected randomly out of 400 learners in Armane Danesh and Pars land institutes. Next, 90 homogenized participants were selected. Then, Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) was given to them to decide the words the learners need to learn. The participants were divided into three groups including two experimental groups and one control group. During the treatment, 76 words that were recognized as unknown words by VKS were trained to all groups. At the end of the study a vocabulary posttest was taken. After two weeks a delayed posttest was given to learners. The collected data were analyzed through ANOVA. The findings of the study showed that both Interfaces were able to improve learners’ vocabulary retrieval and retention. Nevertheless, Visuospatial-based Zoomable Interface was more efficient than Visual-based Graphical User Interface. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the findings of this research are helpful for learners, teachers, and material developers. This research increases learners’ and instructors’ knowledge about the efficiency of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in vocabulary learning. This research informs Material developers that they can combine course books with technology to enhance the quality of language teaching and learning.
