چكيده
This study aimed at investigating the relationship between short-term memory and vocabulary dimension of Iranian male and female intermediate EFL learners. This study was conducted among 60 EFL learners (30 female and 30 males) who were selected among a total number of 120 EFL learners studying in the Tehran Technical Institute (the Lahijan and Rasht branch) on a Pilot Cambridge Key English Test (KET). A VLT (Vocabulary Level Test) was administered to measure their vocabulary and an online standardized short-term memory test to determine their short-term memory capacity. The Pearson correlation coefficient value of (r=. / 752) for females and (r=. /462) for males showed that there appeared to be a significant positive correlation between short-term memory capacity and vocabulary dimension. The significant Pearson correlation coefficient value of (sig=. /00) for female group and (sig=. /010) for male group confined that there was a very strong positive correlation between two variables. For females there was a strong relationship however for males the relationship was moderate. These findings led to the rejection of four null hypotheses raised in the study. These results may have some implications for EFL teachers to pay more attention to the exercises that reinforce student’ short-term memory to improve the way they learn vocabulary.
