چكيده
This study was conducted to investigate the impact of reading stories on Iranian
upper-intermediate EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. For this purpose 80 learners of English at Nemo language institute in Mahshahr, Khuzestan Province participated in this study. Having been homogenized by Oxford Placement Test (OPT), 40 learners were selected and were randomly assigned into two groups of 20, control and experimental. Then both groups sat for a pre-test, which was a vocabulary test. The purpose of this test was to measure the learners’ initial subject knowledge of vocabulary. Afterwards, the experimental group received treatment based on reading stories. However, the control group approached the traditional way of teaching. The treatment procedure took eight weeks. Finally, at the end of the course both groups took the post-test of vocabulary. Analysis of the data obtained from independent-samples t-tests and delayed post-test indicated that there were significant quantitative and statistical differences in the output of participants from the two different groups. This study provides a significant contribution in curriculum innovation and policy with respect to the learners’ vocabulary learning and retention.
