چكيده
This study, within the domain of Error Analysis and Interlanguage study, analyzed how adjectival structures were used by Iranian EFL learners in their argumentative essays at different levels of writing skill. Out of 100 students’ essays, 60 were selected. They represented three band scores based on IELTS rubrics. On the other hand, using two grammar books as references, the researchers developed a taxonomy of different adjective clauses and phrases to measure the frequency and type of these structures as used in the three levels. The result of descriptive statistics revealed an increase both in frequency and accuracy of using adjective clauses and phrases at higher levels of writing skill. Moreover, Pearson Chi-square test along with Chi-Square Test of Independence were carried out to inspect the possible association between the frequency and type of subordinated adjectival clauses and phrases used by the EFL learners and their writing proficiency. The result indicated a positive relationship between using the focal grammatical structures and writing proficiency level. Finally, the types of errors in using the structures in focus revealed the cognitive challenges in using these structures at different levels of writing skill. Finally, pedagogical implications and applications of the research findings were presented.
