چكيده
Being able to communicate fluently and effectively with the speakers of the target language; is the primary goal of learners. Mainly, communicative competence entails many aspects; pragmatic competence being one of those important factors. On the other hand, interjections as the last item on the word class list have not fully been investigated in the teaching and learning domain. Interjections are used with high frequency on a daily basis to express emotions and are an aspect of the spoken language. The main objective of the current study was to investigate the most commonly used English interjections and their Persian Equivalents. Also, the correlation between Iranian EFL learners’ language proficiency and knowledge regarding correct interjection use was examined through a contrastive pragmatic approach. In addition, the researcher sought to identify the most problematic interjections for Iranian EFL learners. In order to assess learners’ knowledge regarding interjection use, a Discourse Completion Test following an Oxford Placement Test was used. The test Results of this research were analyzed quantitatively. The statistical package for social science (SPSS, Version 26) was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics analysis was utilized for the OPT and the DCT scores. Inferential statistics, namely the Pearson Correlation test and simple linear regression analyses were performed to assess a possible meaningful association. The results revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between EFL learners’ language proficiency and their correct use of interjections. However, there were a significant number of errors in the DCT results.
