چكيده
Humor preferences may vary from a culture to another. A joke that is funny in Iran might go over an American’s head or even be offensive to them and the other way around. That’s when the role of the translator emerges. The translator should transfer the humor or joke in context so that it provides the same or close response in the target culture. S/he might do so by applying the strategies for translating humor presented by scholars in the field. The present study investigated issues in the subtitling of humor in the Animated sitcom, Rick and Morty and categorizing them according to the humor classification suggested by Brian Luke Seaward. The study also identified the subtitling strategies used by Persian translators to solve the problems of transferring humor in Rick and Morty. The theory that was used to detect the applied strategies for humor translation was the one suggested by Tomaszkiewicz. Qualitative methods were used to identify the humor acts and the strategies applied by translators to transfer them into Persian in 41 episodes of the Show – the first four seasons and the data analysis method was merely descriptive. The findings showed that different types of humor were used in the selected data. These types were rendered into Persian using a variety of strategies. The most frequent humor type was dry humor, quick wit and puns. The most applied strategy to translate humor acts was Equivalence as specified by Tomaszkiewicz.
