چكيده
Extensive reading is an enjoyable activity and an important tool in foreign language learning and EFL / ESL teachers can use it in their teaching as an effective way to enhance learners' various skills. The present study aimed to investigate Iranian EFL teachers' pedagogic content knowledge of extensive reading and the possible differences between teachers from state schools and those from English language institutes in terms of their pedagogic content knowledge of extensive reading. In addition, the study intended to examine the attitudes of state high school teachers and language institute teachers towards using extensive reading. The data of the study were collected through a researcher-made test which was administered to assess the participants’ pedagogic content knowledge of extensive reading. Twenty-four EFL teachers from state schools and twenty-four EFL teachers from English language institutes participated in the study. In addition, a semi-structured interview was conducted to examine the attitudes of the state school teachers and language institute teachers towards using extensive reading. Five EFL teachers from state schools and five EFL teachers from English language were interviewed. Data analysis of this study was done both qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings of quantitative study showed that there is no statistically significant difference between EFL teachers from state schools and those from English language institutes in their pedagogic content knowledge of extensive reading. Qualitative analysis was used to present the results of interview and analyze the findings. The findings of the interview indicated that both state school teachers and private institutes' teachers have positive attitudes towards the importance of teaching reading in classroom, but they have elementary knowledge about extensive reading and the differences between extensive reading and intensive reading, teachers at language institutes dedicate more time to cover reading section in the classroom, both language institute teachers and state school teachers believed that their main textbook did not include enough passages and exercises for developing reading skill.
