A Corpus-based Study of Lexical Bundles in Conclusion Sections of Medical Research Articles

The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the occurrences and functions of lexical bundles in the conclusion section of research articles in the field of Medical sciences. To this end, a corpus including 50 research articles in the field of medicine (N=50) were chosen from well-established journals. The articles were all published in the time period of 2018 to 2021. Antconc was used for the identification of lexical bundles and concordancing. Then, the functional typology of lexical bundles developed by Hyland (2008) was employed to categorize the bundles functionally. The results of a Chi-square test revealed a significant difference in the frequency, structure and functions of lexical bundles in the corpus of medical research articles. (.000<.05). In addition, a total number of 143 lexical bundles were identified in the corpus under study. The lexical bundles were categorized into 11 categories based on Hyland (2008). In addition, functional analysis of the lexical bundles revealed that the most highly frequent category of lexical bundle in conclusion corpus of Medical research articles was text-oriented bundles. Furthermore, the results revealed that text-oriented lexical bundles in the conclusion sections of medical research articles included six types of functional categories. The first and one of the most important bundles and the role of these bundles in transferring the data and achieving the goal of teaching. Accordingly, using various lexical bundles to highlight the significant parts of academic research articles can help to ease comprehension and lead to effective information delivery
