The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the most frequently used Academic Word List (AWL) as well as General Service List (GSL) words in Customs research articles. To this end, a corpus including 203 customs research articles were randomly selected from well-established journals. The articles were all published in the time period of 2005 to 2021. The words were chosen in terms of Coxhead’s criteria for the selection of AWL words. The words were also classified into word families in terms of Level 6 of Bauer and Nation’s (1993) Scale. In addition, Chung and Nation’s (2003) rating scale was used to distinguish technical words from academic words. A computer software called RANGE was used for the identification of AWL and GSL. The findings revealed that the 512 most frequent word families of GSL accounted for 46.62% of our corpus. In addition, the number of academic words employed in the Custom research articles accounted for 23.77% of the total corpus. In addition, Non GSL/AWL included 29.59% of the whole corpus. A comparison of these words with AWL showed that many of the AWL items were not used frequently in the subject area we examined. The most highly frequent academic words in the corpus under study included the words Result, Show, Value, System and Increase, respectively. In addition, the words Load, List, Refer, Scale, Improve and Examine were employed more frequently than other general words. The results of a Chi-square test revealed a significant difference in the frequency of AWL and GSL in the corpus of Customs research articles. The implication for ESP teachers is that they can focus on the list identified as academic words to be more to the point. The findings can also be of advantage to the instructors and learners of academic writing in that it suggests a wide range of resources for framing the language of research articles, and it assists managing the available resources in developing research articles.
