چكيده
The aim of the present study was to examine the frequency of two metadiscourse markers name hedges and boosters in applied linguistics and translation studies research articles. Despite their importance in academic writing, we know little about how they are used in different disciplines and genres and how foreign language writers present assertions in their writing. This study explored the use of hedges and boosters Based on a corpus of 100,000 words (84 articles), the overall distribution of hedges and boosters were calculated across Discussion section of the research articles. Results of the study showed that the use of hedges was significantly more than boosters in both disciples. So authors in both disciplines are influenced by their subjectivity which results in higher frequencies of hedges. Chi-square test revealed no significance difference across hedges and boosters used in both discipline. The findings of the present study have implications for ESP/EAP teachers and students. Academic English is an important matter for teachers and students of ESP/EAP. They need to be conscious about English grammar and genera English writing. Revising their drafts and publishing RAs in reputable journals, teachers and students need to be aware of metadiscourse markers as their generic feature of their work. Teachers should be equipped with these aspects of knowledge to help students reach their academic goals. Teachers need to draw students' attention to these metadiscoursive devices and to cross-linguistics differences in the use of these devices.
