An Analysis of Moves and their Linguistic Realization of Abstract Sections of Metallurgy Engineering Research Articles.

The evolution of the research article genre and the most effective means of sharing research results of RA abstracts have kept the abstract in the focus of academic investigations. This research study aims to analyze the moves and their linguistic realization in the abstract sections in Metallurgy Engineering research articles. The study, thus, describes the move structure of the Metallurgy Engineering abstract, defines the functions of the identified moves discussing their linguistic realizations in the two corpora. To conduct the research, groups consisting of 200 abstracts published between 2011-2019 were randomly selected from leading and prestigious local English and international journals in the field of Metallurgy Engineering and were, then, analyzed based on Tanko’ (2017). The analysis was accomplished with factor subjected to move analysis performed by a human analyst and also software-driven analysis involving UAM Corpus tool software. Frequency and Chi-Square tests were used for analyses. The results showed significant differences across the two corpora in some moves. In method and outcome sections, both local English and international corpuses indicated high frequency. In conclusion and purpose sections, lower frequency was observed in both corpuses. Consequently, the results suggest that Tanko’ (2017) had been used to the same extent in the two corpora. On the other hand, the international abstracts showed high syntactic complexity and lexical density and contained primarily fewer sentences but higher frequency words in comparison with abstracts in the local abstracts. These features and their high information content make them difficult to process.
