This study investigates the rhetorical structure of Applied Linguistics and sociology research article introductions based on Swales’ (2004) framework of move analysis. In doing so, a corpus of 100 research articles, 50 from applied linguistics, and 50 from sociology, was randomly selected from famous and valid journals. After conducting a detailed analysis of each introduction part of the chosen research articles in the light of Swales’ (2004) model, the author tabulated the frequency of each move and step initially for every discipline separately and then collected them in one table to illustrate the possible similarities and differences. At last, a chi-square test was run to validate the results on a statistical scale. The findings reveal that the introduction part of both Applied Linguistics and Sociology research articles includes all three moves of Swales model (e.g. Move1: establishing a territory, Move2: establishing a niche, and Move3: presenting the present work) and the calculated frequencies are approximately equal suggesting that there are not any statistically significant differences between them .
