Metadiscourse Markers Used in the Abstract Sections of Chemistry Research Articles by Iranian and International Researchers.

The present study attempted to identify the metadiscourse markers used in the abstract sections of national and international Chemistry research articles. In addition, it aimed to investigate if there were any significant differences in the use of Metadiscourse markers used in abstract sections of the two corpora. To find out the answer of the above mentioned questions, a number of 120 research articles were selected from Iranian and international journals through stratified random sampling which led to a corpus of 27347 words. Kopple (1997) for classification of metadiscourse markers was employed to code different types of markers. In addition, Antconc which is a computer program was used to code the data. Results of a Chi square test revealed no significant difference between the metadiscourse markers in the abstract sections of Chemistry research articles authored by Iranian national and international researchers. The findings have some implications for university professors who are engaged with post graduate education in helping the students become professional writers.
