Abstract
Idiom teaching/learning has recently received a remarkable attention by L2 researchers. In this respect, the present study sets out to scrutinize the comparative effects of two idiom teach-ing/learning techniques, brainstorming and summary telling, on idiom learning. Following quasi-experimental research design, 60 female participants who were at same level and had partici-pated in placement test and KET test were chosen from two branches of Shahre Zaban language institute in west Azerbaijan were selected and randomly assigned to four groups; two experi-mental, brainstorming techniques and two experimental summary telling groups. Ten text pas-sages from “Attitudes Through Idiom” including about 100 idioms were employed as materials and each group received twenty pertinent treatment sessions during the study. Receiving instruc-tion on brainstorming, summary telling group was taught new idioms through telling the sum-mary of the text, using new idioms. It is clear that using techniques has positive effect on learn-ing, so there was not any control group in this study.
KET test used to homogenize students who were at intermediate level, despite their participa-tion in placement test in beginning of their studies in Shahre Zaban. Posttest contained compre-hension and production questions, which were given for all groups and after two months they had participated in pretest. Using Independent Samples T-Test, the results indicated that both techniques were significantly effective in idiom learning and retention and the subjects in brain-storming and summary telling groups performed well in tests. However, brainstorming groups were superior to summary telling groups on comprehension part and summary telling groups were superior to brainstorming groups in production part. The findings can be employed by L2 learners, EFL teachers, and curriculum designers. The results revealed a need for negotiation in language classrooms for idiom teaching and learning.
