The present research attempted to investigate the level and nature of competition in adults versus teenagers EFL classes. To reach the aims of this study, 60 Iranian EFL female learners who were divided into two groups of teenagers (30) and adults (30) were recruited in the data collection procedure. To answer the research questions, English language classes at Safir institute in Tehran were observed. To this end, an observation checklist to quantify and evaluate the quality of competition in the classes was used. To delve further into the nature of the competition in the classes an interview was also performed with two teachers and five students. The study adopted a mixed-method research design incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data. The two groups of learners were compared in terms of competitive strategies they manifested in the language learning classes. The teenager learners’ and the adult learners’ age ranged from 13to19 and 20 to30 respectively. The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the adults and teenager EFL learners in terms of their teacher-fronted and student-fronted competition levels. However, no statistically significant difference was observed for the institution-fronted competition levels between the two groups. The findings indicated that teenagers had higher tendency toward student-fronted competition; on the other hand, in teacher-fronted competition, both adults and teenagers had different attitudes toward the proposed items. It was shown that, institution-fronted competition did not have significant impact on both groups' behavior. The findings showed that language teachers can consider competitive learning as a response to their students’ needs and try to use it in the classroom. They also can inform their learners of the potentials of competition to encourage them to take part in classroom activities design based on competitive learning.
