چكيده
The present study investigated Iranian EFL teachers’ types of error correction in speaking at elementary and intermediate levels. To collect data, a checklist based on Ellis and Sheen’s (2011) model was used for class observation. Ten teachers, five at the elementary and 5 at intermediate levels, were selected based on availability sampling method. Generally, as many as twenty sessions of the teachers’ classes were observed. During the observation, the teachers’ corrections of the students’ speaking errors were recorded. The recorded data were subsequently transcribed and analyzed. The result revealed that based on Ellis and Sheen’s nine categories of correction strategies, the teachers at elementary and intermediate level used didactic recast more than other strategies. Furthermore, the results indicated that metalinguistic clue, paralinguistic signal, and clarification request were the least frequent types of speaking error correction strategies used by the teachers. Additionally, the frequency of using different types of correction strategies was significantly higher at the elementary level than the intermediate one. Moreover, it was revealed that there were statistically significant differences in the types of error corrections used by the teachers at the elementary and intermediate levels. The study has practical pedagogical implications can be useful for language teachers, material designers and teacher trainers.
