چكيده
The rapid growth of colleges and universities all around the world, the large number of educational programs and courses offered in English, and the large number of students undertaking their studies in English have contributed to the creation and expansion of ESP (English for specific Purpose) programs. The concept of ESP, first emerged in the 1960s when second language teachers and institutes concluded that common English courses and practices were not sufficient to produce the expected results of the learners and employers in English speaking communities (Bracaj, 2014). Medical universities are no exception though; they offer English courses for their students. Both TEFL and specialist instructors teach English in these universities. The present study aimed to discover the assessment methods that TEFL and specialist instructors apply in their testing procedures. To do so, ten TEFL and ten specialist instructors from medical universities in Guilan Province were selected, and their assessment methods were analyzed. An interview was also performed to discover their testing and assessment orientations. The results showed that the TEFL instructors preferred communicative/integrative testing approches, while specialist instructors tended to use structuralist approach. The TEFL instructors asserted that communicative testing methods are more beneficial due to the nature of ESP.
