This thesis provides a conceptual discussion by using theories that analyze the tensions between self-identity and social identity. These theories propose that identity is reflective of the correlation concerning the roles that people enact in society. Literature has, undoubtedly, a salient role in changing social attitudes toward gender and identity. It reflects the manner society looks at women and the way they estimate their own positions. Jhumpa Lahiri is an eminent Indian-American woman figure in the contemporary literature and the present study challenges gender and identity in the selected stories from Interpreter of Maladies, namely, "Mrs. Senʹs", "A Temporary Matter" and "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine". The stories will be investigated in the light of cultural and feminist criticism and their theoretical concepts. The researcher investigates how Lahiriʹs selected fiction reflects postmodern ideas of identity crisis and matters of cultural wars. Lahiriʹs fictions reject both essentialists understanding of gender and identity as well as uncritical use of solutions offered by the western feminism. This study is conducted by using descriptive-analytic methodology as well as the materials available in the valid libraries. To conclude, they suggest that formulating identity based on gender performativity is not necessarily incompatible with values such as family relationships and domestic practices. Examining Lahiriʹs three selected stories through theories of contemporary feminism through Butlerian perspective will provide the best opportunity for creating a balance between gender and identity spheres.
