The present study aimed at evaluating the frequency of textual metadiscourse markers in the abstract sections of national and international English applied linguistics conferences. To this end, at first national conference abstracts including about 15000 words, as well as international abstracts including 15000 words, were selected from English applied linguistics conferences. After finding the metadiscourse markers, they were analyzed by Kopple’s (1997) Classification model. Moreover, the items were put into diverse tables. Also, the tables were evaluated to compare metadiscourse markers used in national and international conferences. Finally, the result of the present study revealed that, there was not any significant difference between the total number of metadiscourse markers used in abstract of both national and international conferences. However, after analyzing each item individually, there were significant differences in the use of metadiscourse markers in the abstract of English international and Iranian national applied linguistics conferences including Logical Connectives, Illocution Markers, Hedges, Certainty Markers and Attributers
