The major thrust of the present study has been in the area of Althusserian philosophy. As one of the most important theoretical approaches to literature, Althusserian definition of ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses are applied to two of
Tennessee Williams’s plays, namely A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie, the thesis discusses the ways state’s values direct and influence human relationships in domestic places such as family and education. Though plays of domestic settings, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie show the influence of family, educational, and economic ISAs. Exploring the cultures of the American South, the two plays describe female characters who have been brought up with Southern ideological system. Though readers never see their Southern past, they can clearly see the ideological presence of the South in their personality. The source of female tragedy is the new situation in which former courtesy and money is no longer present. To explore this situation, all through the research, the researcher focuses on the contrasts between the two worlds with the background of Althusser’s philosophy, which finally proves to be one of the best approaches to the selected plays.
