چكيده
Epistemological beliefs are individuals’ views of the nature of knowledge and knowing that has been argued to influence their critical thinking which is known to be a fundamental goal of higher education. This study investigated the relationship between Iranian TEFL postgraduate students’ epistemological beliefs and their critical thinking dispositions considering the fact that critical thinking involves both the skills and dispositions to use those skills sufficiently. Based on convenience sampling method, 110 Iranian TEFL postgraduate students consisting of 78 female and 32 male students participated in this study and filled out Schommer’s Epistemological Beliefs Questionnaire and California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory.The findings revealed a significant relationship between students’ epistemological beliefs and their critical thinking dispositions. However, there was not a significant relationship between participants’ gender and their epistemological beliefs. Besides, no statistically significant correlation was reported for the relationship between their gender and critical thinking dispositions. These findings confirm that students with more sophisticated beliefs, regardless of their gender, have more dispositions to use critical thinking skills and subsequently can be more successful students.
