چكيده
This study aimed to investigate the frequency of codeswitching, the type and the functions of codeswitching done by EFL teachers, and their attitudes toward Codeswitching happening in the EFL classroom. The main aim of the study was to find out the relationship between the teachersʹ codeswitching and the learnersʹ proficiency level. To achieve the aim of the study, the mixed-methods approach was used to collect the required data. The participants were ten English language teachers teaching at both Upper-intermediate and Elementary levels simultaneously in Sina Language Institute as an EFL setting in Yazd. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Forty class observations were performed for both levels. During the class observations, the teachersʹ codeswitching statements were noted. The teachersʹ codeswitching was analyzed and categorized into two types of inter-sentential and intra-sentential and five common functions of Explanation, Grammar translation, Teacher admonition, Task instruction and Solidarity. Then, the frequency and percentage of each level were calculated. The results revealed that the amount of codeswitching used by the teachers at the Elementary level was more than that used by the teachers at the Upper-intermediate level. In order to check the possible relationship between EFL teachers’ use of codeswitching and EFL learners’ foreign language proficiency level, the results of the frequency calculations were analyzed using a Chi- Square test. The results illustrated that there was a statistically significant relationship between Iranian EFL learners’ foreign language proficiency levels and teachers’ use of codeswitching.
