چكيده
This study aims to explore the linguistic construal of evaluative stance in the conclusion sections of research articles. The data for the study were the conclusion sections of research articles in the two corpora of soft and hard sciences. Linguistic features in the data were investigated through a detailed study on the basis of appraisal theory, focusing on graduation (Martin & White, 2005). To this end, 160 research articles (80 from each corpus) were selected from the two fields of psychology and industrial engineering written by English native and non-native speakers. All articles were randomly selected from the most leading international journals (Elsevier) published in the last decade and were analyzed based on Martin and White (2005) network of graduation. The corpora were entered in to UAM Corpus Tool for further data analysis. Statistical analysis displayed that there was a significant difference in the use of graduation words, graduation type, force type, and extent type between the two corpora. Results revealed that the writers in the field of psychology use such tokens (graduation words, graduation type, and force type) less frequently than industrial engineering in the academic texts. It can be concluded that the writers in the corpus of industrial engineering used more graduation resources to increase the value position that are distributed in texts by which they interact dynamically in the construction of argument for the writer’s own study. This study could assist EAP/ESP students to learn practically the proper use of evaluative language as a significant feature of academic writing in which they need to maintain a successful interaction with readers and provide insights and resources for EAP/ESP teachers to apply them in teaching courses as a model of evaluative strategies in academic research papers.
