چكيده
A competent English language learner should not only have linguistic knowledge, but also be able to realize culture specific concepts related to the target language, and knowledge on swear words is not an exception. The present study investigated the perception and production of English swear words among Iranian female EFL learners in two levels of upper and lower intermediate language proficiency. To this end, the data were collected through two questionnaires in the form of likert and open-ended questions followed by an structured interview from 80 female language learners (40 in each group) studying English at English language institutes in Shahin Shahr (Esfahan), Iran. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups of lower- and upper-intermediate language proficiency in the production of English swear words. However, there is a slight difference in the perception of these English swear words as the upper-intermediate proficiency level found to recognize more English swear words than the lower-intermediate group. It is recommended that foul language be included in the curriculum of EFL learners so that it improves foreign language learners’ knowledge on target language culture and language norms
