چكيده
Concept of cohesion was first introduced by Halliday and Hassan in 1976. They defined it as a glue that stick concepts of the text together and make the text understandable for readers or hearers. As writing has a prior role in academic tests like IELTS and TOEFEL, the concept of cohesion becomes important for EFL learners. Even the scoring of these exams are partially according to cohesion. This study was designed to find out the relationship that exists between learners’ proficiency levels and their use of cohesive devices. Fifty learners were selected from Rasht Azad University. They were asked to write an essay about the “role of technology in our lives”. Their papers were scored against IELTS band score criteria to define their proficiency levels. They were divided into two groups of intermediate and advanced learners. After collecting data, Pearson was run to find out the relationship between the proficiency levels and use of cohesive ties. The results showed that intermediate learners used more references, while advanced learners tended to use other cohesive devices like lexical cohesion, conjunctions, ellipses and substitution. Running Chi-square and eta proved that advanced learners used more cohesive devices and also it was shown that substitution was used least by learners.
