The aims of the present study were to investigate the Iranian EFL Learners’ perception of the importance and frequency of the motivational strategies, to identify the most underutilized motivational strategies, and finally to investigate any significant relationship between importance of the motivational strategies and their frequent use. Since most of the researches in the field of motivation have been carried out to explore the nature and different types of motivation instead of its actual implementation in the class, this study focused on how to motivate second/foreign language learners by providing a comprehensive list of motivational strategies that Iranian EFL learners perceive as the most important and as the most frequent and also those strategies that still need to be worked on. This study was conducted to identify and develop more effective implementation of motivational strategies. The participants in this study were 160 learners of English in Iran, who were asked to evaluate a list of motivational strategies by Dörnyei and Cheng (2007) and specify the strategies they regarded as the most important and the most frequent ones. The results of the study implied that teachers, learners, and material developers could benefit from the use of the most important, most frequent and the underestimated motivational strategies perceived by Iranian EFL learners and work on them.
