چكيده
Scaffolding, as an instructional strategy, is a significant tool to contribute to the learning process because it provides opportunities for students to solve their learning problems. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of scaffolding instruction on listening comprehension of EFL Iranian learners. The participants in this study were 24 elementary adult EFL learners. They were assigned into two groups: 12 learners in the control group and 12 learners in the experimental group. Each group received the same instructions. The experimental group participated in the scaffolded activities designed by the researcher. Based on the analysis of listening skills materialized in the textbook a listening comprehension test was developed. The treatment was designed by the researcher to develop listening comprehension skills of the experimental group. The treatment took for eighteen sessions in one semester. At the end of the treatment, a post-test was administered to each group. The main statistical results of the study showed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the listening comprehension post-test. In addition, there was no (sig.) correlation between gender and scaffolding performance of EFL learners in listening comprehension. It was concluded that the proposed scaffolded activities were very effective in developing the listening comprehension skills of elementary adult EFL learners. The results suggest the integration of scaffolding instruction into the EFL curriculum. Teachers can be advised to match their teaching techniques with the students’ zones of proximal development.
