چكيده
The purpose of this study is to identify the preferred languagelearning strategies and examine the relationship betweenself-esteem level and direct/indirect language learning strategies of Iranian female EFLlearners. From 90 female EFL learners, 40 intermediate oneswere selected based on their scores on Oxford placement test(2007) for the main study.The data was collected through administering Sorensen Self-Esteem Test questionnaire(2006) for measuring participants’ level of self- esteem and Strategy Inventory for Language Learning( SILL, Oxford, 1989) for identifying participants’ preferred language learning strategies.Data analysis indicated that meta-cognitive strategies were the most used ones by the learners. The results of Chi- squareand Eta test showed that there is a significant positive relationship between level ofself-esteem and the use of direct and indirect strategies. Moreover, the relationship between indirect strategies (metacognitive, affective and social) and self-esteem was also found to be stronger than the relationship between direct strategies(memory, cognitive, compensation) and self- esteem. Finally, the study concluded with important implications and suggestions for future studies.
