چكيده
This quantitative study was an attempt to compare the effects of two methods of storytelling and game playing on Iranian EFL kindergartner learnersʹ vocabulary recognition as well as the methodsʹ superiority over each other. The participants were 40 Iranian EFL kindergartner learners between the ages of 5 to 6who were attending the kindergartenʹs pre-school classes. The kindergarten had got two classes of this age-range; thus, the researcher took advantage of this opportunity and considered the classes as game-based group and story based one. A pretest, just alike the posttest, was run at the first session to check if the participantsʹ know the words or not, and also the groups homogeneity. The treatment lasted for 8 sessions for both groups. At the game-based class the researcher worked 4 different games, each session two of them. All the games were done with flashcards containing the picture of the determined vocabulary(fixed for the story-based group, too). These flashcards were the ones which were used at the test session, too. At the story-based class, the researcher explained 8 concise stories, one at each session. After the 8th session of the treatment, the post-test was administered. Based on the findings of a test of within subjects effects and an independent t-test, it was concluded that both the methods were effective and story-based group did slightly better.
