چكيده
The goal of the study was to find out the influence of pragmatic instruction on Iranian English as foreign language (EFL) learners’ utilization of apology speech act in online language classes and traditional language classes. To fulfill the aims of the study, 80 EFL learners were selected after administering an Oxford Placement Test and they were designated into an experimental group that contained 40 learners and a control group that included 40 learners. Both classes were provided with some information regarding communicative and pragmatic competence, speech acts and speech act of apology and its classification. The experimental group received the information of pragmatic and the other related issues through the social media of Eita and the participants of the control group were provided with the traditional information in their language class without employing the social media of Eita. After completing the training, the discourses completion test (DCT) was given to the participants of both groups. They were asked to put themselves in the determined situations and then provide answers to each situation. The data were analyzed based on Blum- Kulka, House and Kasper’s (1989) model of speech act of apology. To analyze the data, the statistical method of the chi-square was used. The results of the study revealed that in online EFL class and also in traditional EFL class, the learners were capable to promote their pragmatic knowledge and their utilization of apology speech act. Moreover, based on the results, there was no significant difference between the apology speech act used by Iranian EFL Learners in online and traditional language classes.
