چكيده
This true- experimental study attempts to investigate the effect of ‘Vocabulary Bingo’ and ‘Connect Two’ as educational games on pre-intermediate EFL learners’ vocabulary knowledge with a focus on gender. For this aim, by administrating an Oxford Placement Test (OPT) 150 homogeneous participants whose scores on the OPT was between 30 and 39 were selected using stratified random sampling. The participants’ native language was Turkish, and national language was Persian, and both males and females were aged between 15 and 24. Then, two experimental groups were selected; the first group comprised 25 male and 25 female learners whose treatment was Vocabulary Bingo. The second group included 25 male and 25 female learners who received Connect Two as their treatment. There was also a control group consisting of 25male and 25female participants who didn’t receive any treatment. Instead, they were taught through traditional method. To give the chosen treatments, first a VKS as a pretest containing 100 words was given to the candidates as a pre-test. During the instructional treatments 80 words selected from the VKS were as treatment tools used in experimental groups for 12 sessions and 6 weeks. Finally, 30 words among those 80 were chosen and a multiple choice test was designed. First the test was piloted, before administrating then it was given to the participants in both experimental groups and the control group as a post-test. The data collected in this study were analyzed through two-way ANOVA and independent-samples t-test. The findings revealed that both experimental groups i.e. Vocabulary Bingo and Connect Two groups significantly outperformed the control group on the post test. Besides, Vocabulary Bingo group outperformed the Connect Two group since it had a high mean on the post-test. Moreover, in both groups females had better performance. In conclusion, it is safe to state that Vocabulary Bingo and Connect Two as educational games can be effective techniques that can enhance Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary knowledge.
