چكيده
This study aimed at investigating the possible relationship between learners’ willingness to communicate (WTC) and their gender at the intermediate level. To do so, 60 out of 100 intermediate Iranian male and female students studying at a private language college through a standard placement test were selected. The participants were selected and divided into two groups based on the Oxford Placement Test. Thirty students were assigned to the male group, and thirty students were assigned to the female group. In this study, two instruments were used: WTC questionnaire and WTC observation checklist. A Point-Biserial correlation was used to see the correlation between learners’ WTC and their gender. The results revealed that there was a significant relationship between gender and WTC. and the female learners were more willing to communicate than male learners in seven factors as question, answer grammar questions, answer vocabulary questions, one-word short answers, relatively long sentence answers, text answers, and the number of produced words by the learners.. The present research provided a number of implications for language teachers and syllabus designers toward the relationship between WTC and gender in the classroom contexts and it might be effective for further studies.
