Voice is considered as one of the ways to represent the identity of the individuals. Argumentative texts are among the contexts within which individuals delineate their identity through discussing, defending and negotiating points of view. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the representation and manifestation of voice in Iranian EFL learners in persuasive and argumentative text types at intermediate level. Fifty intermediate EFL learners (Thirteen male and 29 female) EFL learners were selected based on availability sampling. This research investigated whether there was any significant relationship between voice and overall quality of intermediate EFL learnersʹ argumentative writing. It also investigated the possible effect of gender on the representation of voice and its possible relationship with the overall quality of the argumentative writing. To measure voice, Helms-Park and Stapletonʹs Voice Intensity Rating Scale (VIRS) and for placement of the students Oxford Placement Test (OPT) were administered. The results of Pearson Correlation Test indicated that there was a positive relationship between the variables and as the voice intensity increased, the overall quality of argumentative writing increased, too. Furthermore, it was found that there was not any significant difference between male and female participants’ performance. This suggests that female and male participants were approximately at the same level of proficiency in terms of their voice as well as the overall quality of writing and its five components. The results of this study have several implications for teachers, researchers and EFL learners.
