چكيده
This research was conducted to investigate the methodological orientation, facilities and future possibilities of CALL-based materials in teaching writing skills. A mixed-methods approach was employed to collect the data. Five English sites were analyzed and evaluated based on the items of a qualitative checklist to investigate the first and second research questions which were the methodological orientation and facilities of CALL-based materials in teaching writing. In addition, the third research question investigating the future possibilities of CALL in writing, was answered through some CALL-related studies. The results of the three parts of the investigation were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively to provide answers to the research questions. For the first two research questions, the data collected from the checklist were analyzed by SPSS for descriptive statistics. For each strategy, the mean, standard deviation, and mean percentage were calculated to show the sites’ methodological orientation and facilities in writing. The findings of this study revealed that in case of methodological orientation, the most favored methodologies implemented in the selected programs were “Writing at discourse level” and “focusing on grammar”. In contrast, the least favored methodology found was “focusing on punctuation”. In case of facilities, the findings revealed that the most available facilities in the selected programs were “Supplementary materials” , “being open access” and “integration of multimedia”. In contrast, the least facilities provided for the students were “gradation of materials” and “automatic feedback system”.
The findings of the present study have implications for teaching writing via CALL-based materials and suggest that students’ L2 writing skills are likely to develop through CALL sites. In fact, computer-assisted language learning can engage students more in the process of learning writing and make them more efficient learners.
