چكيده
The current study investigated the interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers in English and Persian newspaper articles. The purpose of the study was to investigate the frequency of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers in political newspaper articles, which was written in English by American English native speakers and Iranian non-native speakers of English. The Persian newspaper articles were selected from published newspapers in Iran (i.e. Irna, Fars news, Mehr) and English newspaper articles selected from newspapers published in the United States (i.e. Washington post, New York Times). They number of words (2588) matched in order to be analyze according to Hylandʹs (2005) model of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers. The findings of the study indicated that metadiscourse markers were presented in both corpora; however, the distribution of metadiscourse markers was different. Results revealed that both interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers were used more in English corpus rather than Persian. In addition, the findings of the statistical analysis showed that in interactive category, endophoric markers were used just in Persian dataset. There were no significant different in using code glasses on both dataset. Transitions, evidentials and frame markers were used more in English corpus. In interactional category, boosters and self-mentions were used in both corpora. Hedges, attitude markers and engagement markers were used most in English corpus in compare with Persian corpus. The findings of the present study could be helpful for Iranian writers who want to publish their articles in English journals. Therefore, Persian writers should be aware of metadiscourse functions in texts and by considering it, provide a better writings based on metadiscourse strategies.
