چكيده
This study attempted to examine visual and verbal characteristics in Touchstone textbook series. In this regard, eight reading comprehension texts with similar topics were selected from the four Touchstone textbooks. Twelve pictures were analyzed based on Kress and van Leeuween’s (1996, 2006) model of visual grammar, and the eight texts were analyzed based on Halliday’s (2004) model of Transitivity System. The details of pictorial and textual analysis were described separately and then the relationship between pictures and texts were evaluated. The results indicated that the functionality of most visuals in touchstone series was high and they were designed with humanistic communicative trends. Moreover, most pictures supported the linguistic text and were helpful for learners to comprehend the textual content. In addition, verbal analysis revealed that reading comprehension texts of Touchstone textbooks have coherence which makes the texts more comprehensible for the learners and enables them to understand the main idea. Since the findings technically present rational explanations for visual and verbal characteristics of the Touchstone textbook series which are used worldwide, they could also be helpful for textbook developers, educationalist, instructors and teachers in public and private language schools to make logical decisions for material preparation, material development and textbook selection.
