Citation practice has an important role in the academic texts. Hyland (2002) emphasized that the use of appropriate citation would lead to a negotiation between writers and readers in the texts. Different studies have been done on citation practice but little work has been conducted on the comparative analysis of citation practice in native and non-native English speakers’ introduction sections of research articles in the field of applied linguistics. To this end, 160 (80 native and 80 non-native) introduction sections of research articles were randomly selected from leading journals in Applied Linguistics. The data were then analyzed based on Thompson and Tribble’s (2001) taxonomy of citation practice. The findings showed that Iranian non-native English speakers tended to use more citation practice than native English speakers. The statistical results revealed that there were significant differences between the two corpora in the use of some strategies of citation practice such as verb controlling and naming strategies of integral citation practice and identification and reference strategies of non-citation practice. The findings of this study showed native and Iranian English academic writers tended to use non-integral citation practice more than integral citation so as to emphasize the importance of information to cite rather the authors. The results of the study can be implemented for EFL teachers, students, syllabus designers and test takers.
