چكيده
This study investigates the level of heterogeneity in terms of English proficiency among junior high school students and then examines its effects on English teaching process in the classroom. Ninety students of junior high school participated in the study. Moreover, their three English teachers were interviewed. Findings of the study showed that the learnersʹ mean ranks were different; the observed frequencies are not only different from each other but they are different from the expected frequencies; the significance value is low; the residuals of the three groups are not equal at all and also the obtained Chi- square is neither smaller than nor equal to Asymp.Sig. Consequently, all of these qualitative analyses of the data led to the conclusion that the students were heterogeneous in terms of English proficiency. It was so because they had different opportunities for learning English in places other than their classes. The qualitative analysis of the study also showed that the aforementioned heterogeneity in English proficiency had a crucial impact on English teaching process in the class to the extent that the teacher faced many difficulties while teaching in the classroom.
